Along A Stream
(c) 2006 Translation and arrangement by Rick Swanson

Along  a stream running swift and deep
Sat a maiden so happy and gay
Picking wild flowers, laughing all the day.
Then she wove a lovely garland, and she tossed it in the water
And she tossed it in the silvery stream.

As she sat there, weaving garlands so fair
Came a handsome young lad to her side.
Whispering dearly, “Won’t you please be my bride?”
And she promised him sweetly she’d be his so completely,
She’d be his ‘til the end of all time.

Three seasons have passed since she promised her love
But the maiden at the stream sits and cries
Sadly, a victim of the boy’s hurtful lies.
Like the flowers of the summer she’ll be lost in the river
And she’ll drown in a watery grave.

Three roses bloom on the dear girl’s grave
As the young man again draws near.
He’d broken his promise, but he shed not a tear.
The roses watch are keeping, o’er the girl who lies sleeping
A poor girl whose heart was broken in two.
