Two Soldiers
© 2006 Translation and arrangement by Rick Swanson

In Russia the great war was raging
In Russia where many were slain
Two true-hearted soldiers made a promise
Of friendship ‘til they came home again

They swore their trust to each other
They wished to each other, “Fare well!
If one of us should fall in battle
The other his parents will tell.”

Then came the enemy bullet
Striking one friend square in the chest
Bringing misery to his faithful buddy
To the enemy ‘twas merely a jest

The battle came to its ending
Our friend making camp for the night
Taking out a pencil and paper
His sad letter he began to write

He wrote with trembling hand
He wrote with tears in his eyes
“Your son has fallen in battle,
Here in Russia he’ll sleep for all time.”
